RCYC at European ILCA 6 Youth Championships at Ballyholme YC

international entry

The ILCA European Youth championships was held at the end of July in Ballyholme YC with a huge entry and three hundred and fifty eight sailors from across the globe and a huge Irish entry of fifty eight sailors. Royal Cork had eight sailors competing. An international parade of sailors kicked off the event and fine weather really kicked into gear on the first evening of the event. The weather was a substantial influence over the first few days of qualifying with light shifty breeze coming from the land in glorious sunshine which was very unfamiliar to many sailors who have sailed at Ballyholme in the past.

The fine weather continued into Thursday when all racing had to be abandoned to due a lack of wind.

In the leadup to the event, Michael Doherty and Andrew Kingston paid a visit to the Royal Ulster Yacht club and were given a tour from Stephen Milne’s father. Stephen was Peter O’Leary’s crew on his Olympic campaign in the star class in 2008 at Bejing.

The experience of a european championship at this scale will remain with our sailors for a long time and huge credit to Ballyholme YC and all the volunteers who helped out all week including Ed Rice who completed measurements for the nearly four hundred boats.
