Chiefs' Chris Jones, Joe Thuney expected to play in season opener

KANSAS CITY, Mo. — The Kansas City Chiefs have dealt with a multitude of injuries to key players during the preseason.

Chris Jones (shoulder), Joe Thuney (pectoral), Nick Bolton (elbow) and Justin Reid (quad) all haven't played in the preseason.

Hollywood Brown was injured on the first play of the preseason against the Jacksonville Jaguars and Jawaan Taylor injured his shoulder in practice last week.

Andy Reid gave an update their availability for the Chiefs season opener against the Baltimore Ravens on Sep. 5.

"I think all those guys will be ready, the only one in question would probably be Hollywood," Reid said.

Brown is recovering from a dislocated sternoclavicular joint, the same injury Tyreek Hill suffered while playing with the Chiefs in 2019. Brown did not need surgery.

Reid also gave an update on status of running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire, who has been in-and-out the lineup with an illness as he's been dealing with PTSD. CEH was involved in a fatal 2018 shooting when an 18-year-old tried to rob him and he also heroically shielded a young boy and consoled him during the Chiefs rally shooting.

"We're just playing it kind of by ear and how he feels. He started feeling better the day of the game and then he felt pretty good yesterday," Reid said. "We're headed in the right direction. It's a sensitive deal, we're trying to learn as we go here."

Edwards-Helaire is slotted likely be the second string running back behind Isiah Pacheco. Reid spoke on the possibility of putting him Injured Reserve before the start of the season.

"I haven't even gone there yet, with Brett [Veach]. He might have a plan there but I haven't really talked to [Veach] about that. We're trying to get [Edwards-Helaire] back out there and make sure he's comfortable, where he can function."

The Chiefs will close out the preseason at home against the Chicago Bears on Thursday. The starters are not expected to play.
