Taking to Reddit, she shared how she had picked a show-stopping red ball gown with a plunging neckline.

She wrote: “First Time Wedding Guest.

“I’ve never been to a wedding other than when I was a child and for my own wedding.

“It is a black tie, all the men will be wearing tuxes.

“ The bride gave permission for my husband to wear his tux from our wedding

“I’m lost if dress is appropriate for a wedding.”

The woman shared that she “personally wouldn’t care” if a guest wore it to her own wedding, as she had gone for a “semi formal” dress code.

She added that she would have it hemmed to fit better for the big day.

People were quick to take the comments, and many didn’t hold back with their responses.

One said: “It’s…. A lot.

“I’m just being honest. Please at least have it hemmed to avoid mimicking a bridal train.

“Don’t get me wrong you look AMAZING like, wow!

“Maybe save it for an important day where drawing so much focus to yourself is more appropriate.”

Another added: “Way too much cleavage for a wedding.

Wedding Guest Outfit Etiquette

If you're struggling to decided on a dress to see you through wedding season, here's a few rules on what not to wear so you don't get in trouble.

  • Folklore says that wearing red at a wedding means you slept with the groom.
  • Casual attire like jeans and flip flops should always be avoided.
  • Any colour that could be picked up as white or cream – even if it’s not.
  • Most would agree that your cleavage needs to be covered.
  • Wearing white is a massive no-no if you’re not the bride.

“A girl wore a dress like this to my wedding and lots of people were giving side eye and whispering, she also had a couple ‘malfunctions’ throughout the night.”

A third commented: “I think you need to reevaluate your role as a wedding guest.

“Wedding culture is pretty well established now and veterans will assume you are being petty.

“The wedding is for the bride, she spent a lot of money and time planning this party for you to enjoy.

“Keep her feelings in mind when choosing your outfit.”

Meanwhile, some people pointed out that wearing red means you have “slept with the groom”, according to old wives’ tales.

However, one replied: “It’s SO outdated, no one follows this.”

The wedding guest responded to the feedback, and seemed happy to keep searching for an outfit.

She said: “Thank you!

“I’m going to be trying some other stores!”
