Panicked fans feared the worst after Rod, 79, joked to The Sun his “days were numbered” in an exclusive chat last month.

But the Maggie May singer tells us he’s feeling better than ever.

“I appear to have been grossly misunderstood in that interview,” Rod says.

“When I said ‘My days are numbered,’ it was purely in jest. Aren’t everybody’s days numbered?

“I am in embarrassingly wonderful health and enjoying life to the full. I am not dying as far as I know.”

Rod adds: “In actual fact I am in serious training in an attempt to run 100 metres in 18 seconds, which I believe is the world record for a 79 year old.

“I train three or four times a week on my football field and in my gym and swimming pool. I have had the same trainer for 37 years.

“I have completed over 70 shows this year all over the world and more to do.

“It was extremely unfortunate that I had to cancel my 200th show in Las Vegas and reschedule two others in Lake Tahoe and Lincoln, California while I recovered from this summer’s strain of Covid.

“Fortunately, we were already able to replay the shows in California this past weekend and I’ll be back in Las Vegas next year.”

Rod is due back on stage on September 7 and has been recovering at home with his wife Penny Lancaster.

And although he’s not been well, Rod was in great spirits when he spoke to us.

He says: “I have a beautiful wife, eight children and three grandchildren.

“Life is good and I have a lot of life to live but I could still get knocked down by a number nine bus in the Charing Cross Road next week.

“All our days are numbered, but we just don’t know when.”
