A man who confessed to killing 42 women, including his wife, over the past two years has escaped from police custody in Kenya, officials said.

Collins Jumaisi Khalusha – described as a ‘vampire and psychopath’ – was arrested on July 15 after 10 bodies and multiple body parts were found wrapped in plastic sacks in the area of Kware, in Nairobi.

Police said the 33-year-old confessed to the killings and disposing of the remains in the slum neighbourhood where local waste is dumped.

His lawyer told journalists that his client was tortured and forced to confess and maintained he is not guilty.

He had been held in a cell at the police station, but earlier today it was confirmed that Khalusha and 12 others. all from Eritrea, fled by cutting through a wire mesh roof and scaling a perimeter wall.

Gigiri Police Station, where Khalusha was kept, is located just metres away from the US Embassy.

Mohamed Amin, the head of the Directorate of Criminal Investigations, said the escape was ‘unfortunate’.

He added: ‘This was a high-value suspect who was to face serious charges. We are investigating the incident and will take action accordingly.’

A hunt is ongoing to arrest the suspect, who police said was a ‘psycopathic serial killer’.

Khalusha was arrested outside a club where he had gone to watch the Euro 2024 football finals.

He led officers to his single-room rented home in Kware – just 100 metres from the crime scene.

In his home, they discovered a machete, a dozen nylon sacks, industrial rubber gloves, female underwear, rope and other incriminating evidence.

Khalusha then confessed to ‘luring, killing and disposing of the remains’ of 42 women at the dumping site.

The suspect alleged that his first victim was his wife, Imelda Khalenya, who he ‘strangled to death’.

His victims were aged between 18 and 30 and were all killed in the same way, according to the police.
