Emmy predictions: ‘Baby Reindeer’ will win Best Limited Series

Netflix’s “Baby Reindeer” recounts Richard Gadd‘s experience with a stalker. He wrote and starred in the limited series, documenting his own story as a struggling standup and writer who becomes the object of obsession by a woman, named Martha in the show. “Baby Reindeer” was a huge hit for the streamer earning rave reviews including for Jessica Gunning‘s performance as Martha.

This critical acclaim translated to awards success. “Baby Reindeer” is nominated for 11 Emmys: Best Limited Series, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for Gadd, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for Tom Goodman-Hill, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress for Gunning, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress for Nava Mau, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Directing, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Writing, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Casting, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Contemporary Costumes, Best TV Movie/Limited Series Picture Editing, and Best Music Supervision.

“Baby Reindeer” leads the race for Best Limited Series over “True Detective: Night Country,” “Fargo,” “Ripley,” and “Lessons in Chemistry.” It would be the latest true crime story to claim this prize.

“The Assassination of Gianni Versace: American Crime Story” won in 2018. That show, from Ryan Murphy, depicted fashion designer Gianni Versace‘s 1997 assassination at the hand of killer Andrew Cunanan. Édgar Ramírez portrayed Versace while Darren Criss, who won Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor, played Cunanan. Penélope Cruz featured as Donatella Versace.

“The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story” won Best Limited Series in 2016. This one, also from Murphy, was the first entry in the “American Crime Story” umbrella series. This show chronicled the O.J. Simpson murder trial after he was accused and later found innocent of murdering his ex-wife Nicole Brown Simpson and her friend Ronald Goldman. The show featured a star-studded cast including Cuba Gooding Jr. as Simpson, John Travolta as Robert Shapiro, and David Schwimmer as Robert Kardashian. Meanwhile, Courtney B. Vance won Best TV Movie/Limited Series Actor for his portrayal of Johnnie Cochran, Sarah Paulson won Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actress for playing Marcia Clark, and Sterling K. Brown won Best TV Movie/Limited Series Supporting Actor for his portrayal of Christopher Darden.

There have also been plenty of other true crime series nominated for Best Limited Series, including “Dahmer – Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story” in 2023, “Inventing Anna” in 2022, “Unbelievable” in 2020, “When They See Us” and “Escape at Dannemora” in 2019, and “Bonnie & Clyde” in 2014.
