Inside Tom Daley’s new life as college student in Los Angeles as Olympics hero makes major career change after retiring

BRITISH diving legend Tom Daley called time on his career after his fifth Olympics, and is gearing up for a life in Los Angeles.

The 30-year-old ended on a high – winning silver alongside Noah Williams in the men’s synchronised 10m platform at Paris 2024.

Daley competed in his first Games aged just 14, winning five medals

He spoke of his retirement to British Vogue – explaining he was hit with nerves because he knew it would be the last time he would be competing.

Daley told Vogue: “It was emotional at the end, up there on the platform, knowing it was going to be my last competitive dive.

“But I have to make the decision at some point, and it feels like the right time. It’s the right time to call it a day.”

Fashionista Daley has since enrolled at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising in LA.

His love of knitting and crafting colourful jumpers was his inspiration to learn more about creating his own clothing.

“I’ve also enrolled in a class, a course at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising (FIDM) in Los Angeles, to be able to learn how to sew,” he told the fashion bible.

“I knit and I crochet, but sewing will just add a whole different level of knowledge as to how to construct things. I’ve actually designed a couple of pieces of underwear that I’m going to be launching, and then I’m also hoping to launch a swimwear project next year.”

In the City of Angels, Daley and screenwriter husband Dustin Lance Black live a charmed life.

They swapped their swanky, converted Southwark, London flat for a Hollywood condo earlier this year.

It’s there they will continue to raise sons, Robert and Phoenix.

Californian life

As Black revealed, the pair decided to relocate to LA when his court case was thrown out at the end of 2023, following a nightclub spat with BBC presenter Teddy Edwardes.

The Oscar-winning writer was aghast and felt the UK government “owed him an apology.”

He told The Guardian: “This is no longer, you know, do I like or dislike a place? I think that the crown, the government owes me an apology.

“And I have not received it. I think they also owe me a lot of money.”

Since the move, Black and Daley have kept their personal life very private.

Occasionally, Daley will share snippets of their life on social media, including birthday celebrations at their casa.

There were more knitting surprises, as he enjoyed his downtime while training for Paris 2024.

However, those are few and far between.

Because one Daley and Black do love doing together is going on gruelling hikes.

The pair have regularly shared photos on the infamous Runyon Canyon Park trail on Instagram.

As recently as July, they took their boys, Robert and Phoenix up the steep incline.

In a short clip filmed by Black, a topless Tom is seen pushing a stroller up hill in the searing sunshine.

“How you become an Olympian. Have two children, a stroller, and a giant hiking hill,” Black is overheard joking in the video.

The camera then pans out to the view at the top, where the pair celebrate the view.

But it isn’t all hard graft…

Living in LA lifestyle is one thing, but when you’re married to a man in the film business there has to be some perks.

Black made his name in 2009 when he won the best won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Milk, starring Sean Penn.

Most recently, he was the showrunner for Andrew Garfield crime drama Under the Banner of Heaven.

The series was nominated for a number of awards, most notably for its cast.

Daley joined Black at the Critics Choice Awards, where he sat on a table with Spiderman actor Garfield and posed for snaps with TV and film producer Anna Culp.

Black shared a number of images to his 500,000 plus followers, including the two dressed in dapper suits.

He captioned the snaps: “Last week’s dance with the sun and stars.”

Dabbling in politics

With the US in an election year, Donald Trump and Kamala Harris have been campaigning hard.

Although Daley can’t vote being a Brit, he has made sure he supports his hubby’s political views.

When Joe Biden dropped out of the presidential race last month, Harris stepped in to replace him.

That brought an endorsement from Black and Daley, who shared a photo online with the current vice president.

Black wrote: “I’ve had the tremendous good fortune of knowing and admiring @kamalaharris since the very early days of working on the film MILK in San Francisco.

“She is a deeply good person who knows how to fight for what matters most for Americans, and when she fights, she wins.

“I am deeply moved to join President @joebiden in expressing my full support for Vice President Harris, and will do all I can to support her in this critical moment for our country.”
