Foden, who helped drive Pep Guardiola’s City to the Prem title in May, said: “Last season was another very special one for everyone at the club but now all our focus is concentrated on trying to achieve more success this term.

“To win this award is something very special and it is one that I am very proud of and grateful for.

“To be recognised this way by your fellow professionals means everything and I would like to thank everyone who voted for me.

“I also want to pay special thanks to Pep, the City coaches and all my team mates as they help me to try and get better every single day.

“I’d also like to congratulate Kyle Walker, Rodri and Erling Haaland on being voted into the PFA team of the year as it’s great to see their amazing quality recognised in such a way.”

Chelsea’s Cole Palmer was voted as the PFA’s young player of the year after his impressive season following a £40million move from City.

The attacking midfielder finished his debut season with the Blues with 22 goals and 11 assists in 33 league appearances.

His form also saw him be called up to the England squad and he was a part of the team that made it to the final of Euro 2024.

“To be recognised in such a way by my peers is a very special honour.

“I also want to thank my team-mates and the entire coaching staff because without them this wouldn’t be possible.”

Foden was in incredible form last season, scoring 19 goals in just 35 Premier League appearances.

The Englishman also added eight assists during the domestic campaign.

Foden came off the bench in City’s first game of the season against Chelsea.

The Citizens won the clash at Stamford Bridge 2-0 to give themselves a perfect start in their attempt to make it five titles in a row.

Three ways Phil Foden has been transformed into Man City, and England's, most important player

By Lee Scott

PHIL FODEN ran away with the voting for Footballer of the Year – and it’s easy to see why.

Foden has been transformed into Man City’s new David Silva and England’s Euro 2024 swiss army knife.

Initially used sparingly by Pep Guardiola, the Stockport technician has become a key player for City.

Foden’s his tactical intelligence and game understanding make him stand out week in, week out – even in City’s team of expensively-assembled superstars.

From playing the final pass and running between the lines to leading the press, Foden really can do it all.
