Ex-St. Landry Parish employee charged with malfeasance for allegedly misusing gas cards

OPELOUSAS, La. (KLFY) -- A former St. Landry Parish Government employee has been arrested and charged with malfeasance in office in connection with allegedly misused parish gas cards, authorities said.

Byron Boles, 23, of Opelousas, has been arrested in connection with the misuse of SLPG fleet gas cards, according to a parish government news release. Boles faces seven counts of malfeasance in office and seven counts of access device fraud, officials said.

Boles was an animal control officer for the parish before being fired Monday, authorities said.

Investigators said Boles allegedly used the gas cards to put gas in vehicles not belonging to SLPG, leading to significant unexplained expenses.

St. Landry Parish President Jessie Bellard said the parish will not tolerate any misconduct by employees, regardless of their position.

"Misuse of public resources is a serious offense, and those responsible will be held accountable," Bellard said. "If any employee violates the trust placed in them by this community, they will be prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law, even if it means prosecuting our own."

Bond details were not released. The investigation is ongoing.
