City of Hutto breaks ground on South Wastewater Treatment Plant

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- On Tuesday, the city of Hutto broke ground on a crucial expansion of its South Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The expansion will increase the capacity from 2.5 million gallons a day to six million gallons a day, according to the city.

The city said the plant's expansion is critical to support both Hutto's continued growth and its environmentally friendly development.

According to the city, the project will cost a total of $180 million.

City of Hutto Mayor Pro Tem Peter Gordon told KXAN the project has been a long time coming.

"We've been voting on the expansion of this wastewater treatment plant for many years. It's something I have felt personally that we really need to get ahead of. A lot of times what we do in Hutto is we just kind of do the minimum. We do kinda what we can do to get by, and this really shows that the city of Hutto is willing and prepared and ready to invest in our future for the long term."

The new technology going into the expansion will also allow Hutto to treat wastewater for re-use in things like irrigation or fire protection, the city said.

The estimated project completion is set for Dec. 31, 2026, according to the city.
