Union introduces Tony Maci as women's head hockey coach
SCHENECTADY, NY (NEWS10) -- Josh Sciba left Union to become an assistant with PWHL New York just a month ago, leaving the Garnet Chargers women hockey program with a vacancy at the head coaching position late into the offseason. Union moved quickly, hiring their new leading man Tony Maci three weeks ago, introducing him Tuesday.
Union tabbed former Clarkson associate head coach Tony Maci as their new head coach. Maci spent the last 8 years on the Clarkson staff. During his time there, Clarkson won two National Championships, and made it to four Frozen Fours.
The Union women have played 23 seasons, but have never finished a campaign above the .500 mark. But Maci says he feels like he's joining the program at an exciting time. "For me, it was one of those opportunities where scholarships are now going to be full coming up and the brand new rink is going to be awesome," said Maci. "Getting in at the right time, I think, was part of the decision. And then meeting the people here. I'm a big people person, so once I met the people here, I knew it was going to be a good move for me."
He outlined his plan to turn the program to another level. "I think we're going to take it day by day," said Maci. "I think that's all we can do. It's going to be a process. That's kind of the buzzword nowadays is the process. We've got to be a team that sticks to the details. We've got to be a team that works in the weight room, works on the ice, and it's going to stem from there. If we can work hard, then we'll allow our skill and our talent that we're going to develop here to kind of shine through. It's going to be a bit of a process, but I think it can be something that this group can do fairly quickly."
Union begins the season at Robert Morris on September 27.
