Rooney, 38, is United’s record goalscorer and found the net 253 times in 559 games.

He signed in the summer of 2004 and spent 13 years at the club before returning to Everton.

The Plymouth boss also played for DC United and Derby, but revealed he wished he had the chance to play for Celtic.

He said: “My family and I have always followed Celtic, since I was a boy anyway, so my kids have all got Celtic kits and I always look out for the scores.”

Rooney will join a number of his former team-mates at Old Trafford, with Bryan Robson managing the team.

Wazza’s title winning team-mates making a return include Michael Carrick, Darren Fletcher, Antonio Valencia, Dimitar Berbatov, Nicky Butt, and Paul Scholes.

Berbatov, who played for United Legends against Liverpool two years ago, is delighted to return once again.

He said: “It’s always great to reunite with the boys, share some banter, play football, and most importantly, raise money for a worthy cause.

“It’s wonderful that we, as former players, can contribute to the Foundation’s various initiatives while doing what we love.”

Rooney has one win, a draw and a defeat as Plymouth boss and he revealed he got over losing his first match 4-0 by watching TV show First Dates.

He said: “After the game on Sunday I turned my phone off and watched an episode of First Dates.

“It’s important you switch off, you can get away from it, and then I revisited it Monday morning and watched the game back.

“You can have a bad game, it happens. It’s important they are able to switch off because sometimes you can think about it too much and it affects you mentally.

“I understand it, there’s a lot more scrutiny on me, that’s fine, I can deal with it.

“I know what we’re doing and what we’re trying to achieve at the club.

“It was a surprise on Sunday but I don’t think it was a time to panic and we’ve had time to get the team in, discuss it and put that game to bed.

“There was some harsh words said to the players on that performance.

“I wanted and expected a reaction (against Cheltenham) and I got that.”
