Where to catch live music this week
From August festivals to intimate gigs, there are plenty of live music performances to enjoy this week. Bars and live music venues continue hosting the island’s talented local musicians and as the weekend approaches, several prepare to take the stage.
On Thursday, the Antiquities Department organises a concert at Larnaca’s Medieval Castle titled In the Glow of the Moon. Star of the night is singer Vakia Stavrou, who will present an international repertoire taking audiences on a journey through the magical world of music. Songs in French, Greek, Italian, Portuguese and other languages will sound, accompanied on the piano by Manolis Neophytou. Entrance is free but head early to find a seat.
Over at Spilia village, Anna Chrysanthou will present a series of well-known and beloved songs from the Greek entechno and rock scene this Saturday as well as Cypriot songs and originals from her first album. Joining her on the cello will be Angelina Constantiou. This concert is also free and starts at 8.30pm at the Irene Amphitheatre.
Also happening on Saturday but in Nicosia is a live performance by the Kontrafouris Baby Trio at Mikri Arktos. Greek organist George Kontrafouris and young Cypriot musicians Alexandros Adam on the guitar and Nikolas Tsangaris on the drums make up the trio. Their music pays tribute to great organ trios from the 60s to the 90s as well as fresh arrangements of jazz standards.
One more music performance is planned for this week and it forms part of a series that celebrates the 10th anniversary of Technopolis 20. Performing next at the Paphos cultural centre is George Kalopedis, four years after his last performance at the Technopolis 20 garden. His quartet will join the live on Sunday, comprised of Loukas Louka on piano, drummer Marios Spyrou and double bassist Costas Challoumas. Together they will perform swing, classic jazz, soul and RnB tunes as well as music by Frank Sinatra and the Rat Pack, Michael Bublé, Ray Charles and Van Morrison.
