When is the first day of fall?

NEW YORK (PIX11) -- With temperatures around New York City getting cooler, it is not hard to think about the autumn season, but when is the first day of fall?

The autumnal equinox marks the first day of fall. According to the Farmer's Almanac, the autumnal equinox happens when the sun crosses the equator from north to south.

This year, the first day of fall is Sunday, Sept. 22.

Fall lasts until the first day of winter in December.
