Local libraries giving out original trading cards
FORT PLAIN, N.Y. (NEWS10) -MVLS-GO! is the Mohawk Valley Library System's debut trading card set. It features 14 different libraries, each with a unique design.
Some cards show off architecture while others feature symbols or objects you can find inside. "I wanted to be able to hold them in my hands. That's the biggest thing. I wanted to be able to physically hold it, see how they looked together and we're like, this looks really cool," described Sam Zimmerman, the creator of MVLS-GO!.
After creating all the cards herself, Zimmerman says the cards in turn create excitement around going to a local library along with the FOMO surrounding collectibles. Some cards even feature upcoming events.
"And so when you get a preview of like, oh, Frothingham has this really cool card; we have to go there," said Zimmerman. "Or, omigosh, I love the way Amsterdam's card looks; we have to go there. We have to collect it. By happenchance when you go there, you get to experience the summer reading program there."
Exclusively in Fort Plain, the library has a 31-card set for its summer reading program. There's a total of 15 cards to collect in the first set of MVLS-GO!.
This is only the beginning of many cards to come. "I would love to expand it to make it an actual playing game because it would be so fun if the game itself became popular beyond it. I have spreadsheets like if this card beat this card, does this card beat this card? And that'd be so cool to try and get a functional system," explained Zimmerman.
