Eye on Scams: How to keep your verified social media account safe

LAFAYETTE, La. (KLFY) -- Recent phishing scams have been targeting businesses and individuals with verified accounts, according to the Better Business Bureau.

Although account verification is a measure that is supposed to prevent scams, the BBB is offering some tips on how to keep your verified account extra secure.

But first, let's learn how the scam works.

The BBB said the scam will present itself as a direct message or email that appears to come directly from a social media platform, such as X or Instagram, claiming that your account has been flagged. The message or email will claim that you will need to re-verify your account or risk losing your verified account badge if you don't respond.

Some X users have reported getting messages or emails claiming their blue verified badge has been marked as spam, and if they don't appeal the decision, it will be deleted, the BBB said.

The scam message will say you must click on a link or download a form to start the appeal process in order to re-verify your account. That link, however, may contain malware that can collect your personal data without your knowledge. Or simply filling out the forms may give the scammers the information they need to hack your account or use your personal information to commit identify theft, the BBB said.

Now that we understand how the scam works, here are tips that the BBB is offering to help keep your social media accounts safe:

Understand how social media platforms work

The BBB encourages individuals and businesses to understand a social media platform's policies before using it. For instance, X never sends emails requesting login credentials, nor does the platform send emails with attachments, the BBB said.

Be wary of unsolicited messages

Be skeptical about out-of-the-blue messages, especially if they ask you to click on links or open attachments, the BBB said. If you ever have doubts, go straight to the source instead of opening the links or attachments.

Look for the signs of a scam

Some signs to look for include poor spelling, bad grammar and a pressure to act now. Other signs include a demand for payment or a scare tactic, such as the risk of losing your verified account or verified badge.

Always protect your personal information

Never give a stranger your login credentials or other personal information without verifying if their request is legitimate, the BBB said. Most reputable companies will not ask you for your login information.

Monitor your accounts

Monitor your social media accounts and do a search to make sure there are no other accounts claiming to be you.

If you have been contacted by a scammer, you can report your experience to the BBB Scam Tracker to help others recognize the scam.
