Sands City Residence

Sands City Residence is a minimal home located in Chengdu, China, designed by ANG 3 STUDIO. This ambitious project metamorphosed a 180-square-meter dwelling from a generic “model room” into a minimalist sanctuary, where black and white hues reign supreme, crafting an ambiance of refined elegance. The original blueprint, ill-suited to the homeowner’s vision, necessitated a comprehensive reimagining. The result is a masterful blend of form and function, where aesthetic sophistication harmonizes with practical needs. At the core of this domestic transformation lie two sinuous black sofas, anchoring the living room and serving as the gravitational center of the home. These curvaceous pieces sculpt an intimate enclave, positioning the living area as both a haven for repose and the social nucleus of the residence.

Custom marble display cases, their natural veining adding depth and texture, stand in aesthetic counterpoint, offering sanctuary to objets d’art and literary treasures. An integrated alcohol fireplace, dancing with real flames, infuses the space with warmth, particularly welcome during the city’s cooler seasons. The design ethos embraces a bold inclusivity, mirroring Chengdu’s own balance of tradition and modernity. An original beam, preserved as a testament to the structure’s history, introduces an element of raw beauty to the living room, an unexpected yet captivating focal point. The social heartbeat of the living room extends seamlessly into the dining area, fostering a fluidity between relaxation and repast.

This open-plan configuration encourages a versatile approach to leisure, allowing for effortless transitions between entertaining and quotidian activities. The master bedroom stands as a private retreat, complete with a walk-in closet, en-suite bathroom, and the luxury of an in-room bathtub. The homeowner’s predilection for black is honored throughout, creating an atmosphere of deep sophistication. The crowning jewel of the master bath is a tub hewn from a single piece of silver-grey stone, epitomizing opulence. The bathroom’s design cleverly employs a black and white palette to delineate wet and dry areas, visually expanding the space without compromising aesthetic continuity.

Departing from conventional wisdom, the traditional separation of bathroom zones was reconsidered, yielding a bespoke solution that aligns perfectly with the homeowner’s lifestyle. In the children’s room, playfulness and sophistication coalesce in a palette dominated by duck yellow, infusing the space with warmth and youthful energy. A multi-level floor bed ingeniously partitions the room into distinct zones for rest and play. Customized furnishings seamlessly integrate storage and study areas, ensuring the space evolves in tandem with its young occupant. The study perpetuates the monochromatic theme, offering a focused environment for intellectual pursuits. The dark backdrop minimizes visual noise, while the south-facing window, framed in black, filters natural light to create an atmosphere conducive to concentration and creativity.
