BY THE NUMBERS: A Look Back Before the Spirit Returns to Regular Season Play

Off to one of its best starts in club history, the Washington Spirit sits in third place on the NWSL table with a 11-4-1 (34 points) record. Let’s take a look at some of the impressive accomplishments of both the team and a few individual players as the team gears up for the resumption of the NWSL regular season.

PLAYER STATS

  • Makenna Morris
    • In her first career start, Morris became the first Spirit player in team history to record a goal, assist, and earn a penalty in a single game. Her goal was also the fastest Spirit goal scored this season (3:52).
  • Aubrey Kingsbury
    • Kingsbury recorded her 32nd clean sheet with the Spirit in the team’s most recent regular season match before the summer window. Earlier this year, she became the fifth player in NWSL history to record 30 clean sheets with one club. Additionally, she has saved two consecutive penalty kicks this season bringing her career total to seven, third-most in NWSL history.
  • Croix Bethune
    • Bethune has logged nine assists this season, moving into a tie for second-most in NWSL history, joining Lauren Holiday (2013) and Nahomi Kawasumi (2017). This total was punctuated by a three assist match on May 1, when she became the fifth player in NWSL history to accomplish this feat.
  • Trinity Rodman
    • In the team’s third game of the season, Rodman broke the Spirit’s all-time career assists record, passing Crystal Dunn. Currently, Rodman has 14 career assists. Additionally, she also became the youngest player to have 40 goal contributions (all competitions) at 21 years, 347 days old.

TEAM STATS

  • With 34 points and a 11-4-1 record, the Spirit is one point shy of its best start through 16 matches set by the NWSL Championship finalist 2016 squad. However, the Spirit currently has more goals (32) through 16 matches than the 2016 team had in its entire regular season (30).
  • When leading at half this season, the Spirit is a perfect 9-0-0. In fact, the Spirit is unbeaten in its last 28 matches (21-0-7) when leading at the half.
  • The Spirit has 12 different goal scorers this season — one shy of the Spirit all-time record. Among them, five goal scorers are 2024 NWSL Draft selections meaning that every rostered Spirit NWSL Draft pick has scored this season. This is the most rookies to score a goal in a season in Spirit history, and these rookies’ 10 total goals lead the NWSL.
  • The Spirit leads the NWSL with 20 first half goals.
  • The Spirit has successfully converted each of its NWSL-leading four penalty kicks this year, extending its streak of converting every regular season penalty kick since July 2022.
  • Following its most recent victory over Bay FC, the Spirit won its fourth straight road match, a team record.
  • On June 15, the Spirit SOLD OUT Audi Field with a record crowd of 19,897.
