Chiefs drop third preseason game against Bears
KANSAS CITY (KSNT) - The Kansas City Chiefs lost in their third and final preseason game against the Chicago Bears.
The Chiefs' non-starters got their time in the spotlight Thursday night, with many members of Kansas City's starting talent - Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, Chris Jones, etc. - looking on from the sidelines. Caleb Williams, the No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 NFL draft, did not take the field for Chicago either.
Chicago got on the board first, scoring a touchdown on its opening drive and a field goal later in the first quarter. The Bears led the way 10-0 entering the second quarter after Harrison Butker missed a 59-yard field goal wide-right for Kansas City, but the Chiefs were quick to close the gap.
KC rookie Carson Steele broke away for a 32-yard touchdown run, though it was reversed after the officiating crew ruled him down at the one yard line. Steele wasted no time pounding in the Chiefs' first score on the next play.
After another field goal and a pick-six from Bears' Reddy Stewart, Chicago took a 20-7 lead into halftime.
Third-string quarterback Chris Oladakun started the game for the Chiefs, and fourth-stringer Ian Book took his place midway through the third quarter to finish things off. However, Chicago cruised to a 34-7 lead in the third quarter, behind touchdowns from Tommy Sweeney and Velus Jones Jr.
In the fourth quarter , Book connected with Cornell Powell to cut the gap to 34-14. Kamal Hadden sparked momentum with a fumble recovery, but the Chiefs were unable to convert the turnover into points.
Chicago ended up on top when time expired, denying Kansas City of its first preseason win with a 34 to 21 victory.
Kansas City opens its season at home on Thursday, Sept. 5 against the Baltimore Ravens, kicking off the entire 2024 NFL season.
