Selena Gomez and David Henrie are opening up about the upcoming new series Wizards Beyond Waverly Place!

The two Wizards of Waverly Place co-stars are reprising their roles in the spinoff, and they’re both also executive producing. Selena will only appear in the first episode though, while David serves as a series regular.

While attending the season four premiere of her other show Only Murders in the Building, the Russo siblings dished on how the idea for the reboot came up and what it was like returning to those roles.

“It felt like I was home again,” Selena told Variety‘s Marc Malkin. “I’m so happy I got to bring back this childhood gift that I was given to new little ones out there.”

As for whether the show will continue for multiple seasons, she adds, “We don’t know, but if people like it, we’ll see.”

David revealed that he and Selena were actually the ones who came up with rebooting the show!

Selena and I and my wife spent so much time over the years drinking wine and talking about where the characters would be, we looked at each other at one point and said, ‘I think we have a show. I think we should go talk to Disney about this.’ And we did. It took years of development to get it exactly where it needed to be,” he said.

“It came out of a place love,” David added. “The number one thing Selena gets asked about even till today is Wizards. It’s a show that meant a lot to a lot of people.”

As for that first day of filming the pilot episode together, he said it was “bonkers.”

“It was unspoken but we were behind a door and heard, ‘Action,’ we looked at one another and were like, ‘This is crazy.’ It was like a day hadn’t passed in 12 years. We were right back to where we were.”

On the possibility of future seasons, David said, “It’s such a fertile universe. You could do so much.”

If you missed it, Disney Channel recently released a behind-the-scenes video of the making of that first episode and the show in general. Check it out!

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is set to premiere later this year on Disney Channel and Disney+.

David previously opened up about reuniting with Selena for the new series.
