‘Manslaughter investigation launched’ over sinking of Bayesian superyacht
Investigators are considering possible criminal charges of shipwreck and manslaughter in relation to the sinking of the Bayesian superyacht on Monday, according to reports.
Prosecutors in the town of Termini Imerese, near where the vessel went down off the coast of Sicily, are scheduled to hold a press conference tomorrow morning. They are said to be looking into allegations of ‘shipwreck and multiple culpable homicide’ – similar to manslaughter in the UK – against ‘unknown persons’, local media reports.
The body of British tech magnate Mike Lynch was among five recovered from the vessel on Thursday, but searches resumed this morning for his teenage daughter Hannah Lynch who is now the only passenger unaccounted for. An Italian interior ministry official suggested yesterday she may not be inside the yacht. The disaster has baffled experts, who say the vessel – said by its manufacturer to be ‘virtually unsinkable’ – should have withstood the storm.
