Sculpting Archetypes

Sculpting Archetypes is a series of minimalist chairs by the Antwerp and Brussels-based design studio, Destroyers/Builders. Released in 2024, Sculpting Archetypes includes two seating designs: the “Dining” and “Low” chairs. Each version offers a simple, timeless design that balances the juxtaposition of hardness and softness along with traditional and contemporary design aesthetics.

Made with tulipwood, pigment, and lacquer, the Sculpting Archetypes chairs feature a carved surface that gives the seats a charming, tactile appearance. In an iteration of the “Dining” chair, sections of wood are carved away, internationally revealing the raw material, resulting in an enticing visual contrast that simultaneously pays homage to the sculptural character of the design.

“[Sculpting Archeypes] show the maker’s hand and my admiration for tactility, aiming for a more sensorial environment,” shares designer and founder of the studio, Linde Freya Tangelder.

Lacquered and sculpted by hand in Tangelder’s studio in Belgium, Sculpting Archeypes is a continuation of Destroyers/Builder’s focus on exploring materials and techniques. The chairs also mark a new series in which volumes and forms can be further experimented with to highlight the transformative potential of materials.
