News and Notes: Guardians Lifeless in New York

Another trip to the Bronx, another disappointing result with no change on the horizon

The frustration is beginning to mount with the Guardians.

Coming into Monday, the Guardians hadn't won a series against the Yankees since 2021 in the Bronx, and their fortunes didn't change here. The starting pitching was poor in games two and three, and outside of a largely luck-dependent 12th inning in game one, the offense put up four runs across the regulation nine innings combined in this series, and it’s far from a Yankees problem for the Guardians.

This offense has been bad for a while now, namely against right-handed pitching. Since the All-Star break, Cleveland has just three hitters running an above average wRC+ against righties, and then nobody else is close to being league average.

It’s dire right now, and it doesn’t seem like help is on the way.

JOSE MAKES HISTORY

Jose Ramírez made team history against the Yankees, swiping his 30th bag of the season, making him the first multi-time 30/30 player in Cleveland’s long history and just the 15th player ever with multiple 30/30 seasons.

DOWN ON THE FARM

Columbus
George Valera has put together quite the month of August, mashing four home runs across 16 games, including three over the last two games, including this pimp job.

Valera isn’t the only one swinging a hot stick, either. Gabriel Arias has been a different kind of hot, slashing .377/.431/.698 in August, as his swing and approach adjustments are resulting in a major power surge everyone knew he was capable of. It’s Arias’s best stretch of play at any point in Cleveland’s system. Let this be a turning point for the young shortstop.

Chase DeLauter logged his first Triple-A hit off of Jared Jones! Here’s to more of those to come.

Akron
Parker Messick has been incredible since getting to Akron. Across 35.2 innings in Double-A, Parker Messick is running a 1.99 ERA with a 28.7% K-BB% and a staggering 38.2% whiff rate. This is dominance, plain and simple.

Cooper Ingle has seen his tremendous High-A start translate directly over to Double-A thus far, as the backstop is running a 173 wRC+ across his first handful of games. Ingle’s bat has proven to be as advanced as advertised as his defense continues to come around.

Lake County/Lynchburg
If you aren’t watching the Captains at least once or twice a week, you are missing out. Bazzana, Genao, Ralphy, Cozart, Antuñez...it’s showtime.

It’s beyond time to get Jaison Chourio out of Lynchburg and up in Lake County. The 19-year old needs a step up in competition purely for his sake. Chourio is hitting .200 in August, but his OBP is .485. He simply isn’t getting anything to hit. Chourio has walked 21 times in 15 games in August, and he’s recorded a walk in 16 straight games. Promote him.
