Pundit thinks Jamie O’Hara is being harsh for criticising big-money Spurs signing

Jason Cundy has leapt to the defence of Brennan Johnson after Jamie O’Hara unleashed a furious rant about the Tottenham winger, insisting that time is running out for him.

Brennan Johnson hasn’t lived up to £50m price tag

After a difficult start to his Tottenham career, Johnson ended last season quite strongly and Spurs fans will be hoping that the winger kicks on to the next level this campaign.

However, the 23-year-old did not start the season the way he would have wanted as he had a night to forget at the King Power Stadium on Monday, looking quite clumsy and rushed in the final third.

The winger was eventually withdrawn in the latter stages of the game as Spurs went in search of a winner, but the man who replaced him, Timo Werner, did not fare much better.

O’Hara was not happy with what he saw from the former Nottingham Forest man, insisting that his first touch lets him down too often and that he has to be much better to play for a club such as Tottenham.

Jamie O’Hara says time is running out for Johnson

The former Spurs midfielder told talkSPORT (21/08/24): “Brennan Johnson, for me, he has to be better. We paid £50 million. He is more than anyone who winds me up. Every time he gets the ball, it looks like he forgets how to control it.

“He is so frustrating. He needs to be better in a Spurs shirt. If you are going to play right-wing for Spurs, you think of all the great right-wingers we have had. He needs to be better.

“He has been there a season and he needs to hit the ground running. Brennan Johnson needs to be better. For me, he hasn’t been good enough – Brennan Johnson needs to give me more.

“His final ball isn’t good enough. The amount of times Maddison in the first half sweeps the ball out to him and his first touch just lets him down. He knows it as well because he looks at himself.”

Jason Cundy then told his fellow pundit that he is being ‘harsh’, adding: “You can’t compare him with Jimmy Greaves or Aaron Lennon. You can’t do that and it’s not fair. You are having a pop and things can improve.”

Spurs Web Opinion

I think the one thing that really does not help Johnson is the transfer fee that he came for, with many expecting a lot more from a £50m player.

However, the winger is still very young and undoubtedly has the raw materials to develop into a top player.
