Destination Louisiane: Gueydan Duck Festival

GUEYDAN, La. (KLFY) -- Festival Season starts with a bang in Vermilion Parish, more specifically the small town of Gueydan, the Duck Capital of the World, with this weekend's Gueydan Duck Festival.

Todd Scott, president of the Gueydan Duck Festival, has seen it grow over the past 47 years.

"You got to understand, we started on Main Street and get on," Scott said. "And then about a block from here is some grounds that belong to the police. We work there. And then past President Ronnie, you know, got everybody and bought this place."

Visitors to Gueydan get a unique experience thanks to the plethora of events held during the four days of festivities, which highlights the hunting heritage of the Acadiana region.

"We hold Louisiana State duck and goose calling contests on Sundays," Scott said. "We have a duck and goose cooking contest. We have dog trials that I mean, they've grown each year. We also have a skeet shoot. That's tied in with the festival. So everything ties into the hunting theme."

In addition to that great food, the festival fetures nightly bands, Junior and Senior Queens pageants, a Grand Parade, Outdoor and Indoor Cooking Contest, and to top it all off, a thrilling Carnival.

Scott said it's a unique event that helps to benefit students in the Gueydan area.

"Annual scholarship that we pay every year to students," he said. "We also every other year like this year, our Queens going to Washington, D.C. But the upkeep of the grounds is where it goes. You know, we're a 501c3, so everything goes back and trying to upgrade this building."

Organizers encourage visitors from across the state to come try this event on for size, pointing out it's one of the most unique in the state.
