Iran arrests 14 ISIS-Khorasan members amid rising regional attacks

Iran’s Ministry of Intelligence announced the arrest of 14 members of ISIS’s Khorasan branch following a series of security operations.

The Ministry stated that seven members were arrested in Fars Province, while the others were detained in Tehran, Alborz, and Khuzestan Provinces.

On Friday, August 23, the Ministry’s newsletter reported: “14 individuals associated with the U.S.-Israeli-backed group known as ISIS Khorasan were identified and arrested under judicial orders.”

The newsletter also noted that the ISIS Khorasan members had recently entered Iran illegally with the intent to carry out “terrorist operations.” The country of origin for these individuals remains unknown.

The Ministry has not disclosed the identities of the detainees.

The Ministry urged citizens and religious center officials to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities to security forces ahead of the Arbaeen pilgrimage.

In the meantime, ISIS Khorasan’s deadly attacks have increased in Afghanistan and the border regions of Pakistan. The group previously claimed responsibility for a Thursday attack on a Taliban ranger in Nangarhar’s Dara-e-Noor district.

Over the past week, ISIS Khorasan has also claimed responsibility for two additional attacks on Pakistani military personnel in the Khyber and Bajaur districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, near the Afghanistan border.

The rise in ISIS Khorasan’s activities reflects the growing instability in the region, exacerbated by the Taliban’s return to power. The group’s increased operations highlight ongoing security challenges in Afghanistan and neighboring countries.
