Megwa Delighted With New Deal

Hibernian defender Kanayo Megwa admitted it was a ‘no-brainer’ of a decision to extend his contract with Hibs.

Megwa penned a new four-year deal with the Club, extending his contract until summer 2028.

Speaking to Hibs TV, Kanayo told us how happy he was to be offered a long-term deal.

“I am really happy, we have been talking about it for a while, so I am delighted to get the deal over the line.

“The Manager spoke to me and told me how much he trusts me and spoke to me about what I can do in the future – so it was a no-brainer of a decision for me to sign.

“He has worked with me for a while now, he trusts me, he knows what I can do. I’ve signed the deal now, so hopefully I can progress from here.”

Kanayo initially joined the Hibees in 2021 and has worked his way up through the Academy, impressing and developing at each level he has played.

As a teenager, he won the CAS U18s Elite League with Hibs before playing his part in the U19s UEFA Youth League adventure in the 2022/23 campaign.

Since then, Megwa has made his First Team debut and enjoyed spells loans at Kelty Hearts and most recently Airdrieonians last season – all experiences which have helped shape the 20-year as both a person and a player.

“It has been an interesting journey for me here at Hibs." Kanayo continued.

"I have played for the U18s, I have played a lot of different positions and I have been getting used to living in another country. I never thought I would get this far, so to sign a new deal has been great.

“Airdrie was a great experience for me and my confidence. It was great to get out playing, learning from a new Manager and playing in a new system – I feel I adapted pretty so it was a good experience.

“Hopefully I can solidify my spot in the squad and in the future help Hibs win as many trophies as possible going forward.”
