A Night of Making New Friends in Brooklyn

This week on the Cut, we’ve been discussing friendship breakups and the complications that arise in those relationships — and what better way to celebrate it than spending the night with friends, new and old? On Wednesday, the Cut readers gathered at Happy Medium in Greenpoint for a night of crafting and making new friends. The café — which can be harder to get a table at than Sailor — features a robust menu of art options, like painting mugs, doing watercolors, and making friendship bracelets. With the weather turning for the better, it was the perfect place to strike up a conversation while crafting away.

For me, it was a chance to hang out with co-workers outside of the office and eat BonBon candy together, which made us immediately closer, at least in my eyes. In the backyard, friends and strangers gathered around tables set with colorful beads, a jar of conversation starters, and plenty of Cut tote bags, which were filled with gifts from Meet Flamingo, Inside Then Out, Erborian, and California Naturals.

While you could choose your craft, most people stuck with creating beaded bracelets, where you could add a personal flair, like your name, a letter, or, in my case, a phone number. You never know when it’ll come in handy! And no, I didn’t realize that was Travis Kelce’s initial move on Taylor Swift, but I have to hand it to him, because it is smooth. When it was time to wrap up, people gathered their crafts, filled their BonBon bags to the brim, and left with more friends than they came with. It was an all-around win.
