‘Fruitful exchange of views’ in first Cyprus problem political group meeting

The first ever meeting of the “Cyprus problem political group” saw a “fruitful exchange of views”, according to reports.

The Cyprus News Agency (CNA) said that the meeting, chaired by President Nikos Christodoulides’ chief negotiator Menelaos Menelaou, took place on Friday.

The meeting reportedly discussed issues regarding the group’s operation, recent developments regarding the Cyprus problem, and relations between Turkey and the European Union.

It was also reported by CNA that no new meeting has been scheduled for the group, and that if another meeting is held, a decision will be made in this direction by Christodoulides.

The “political group” was first created by Christodoulides in April, and consists of 12 members, including MPs past and present from across the political spectrum, and lawyers.

At the time, government spokesman Konstantinos Letymbiotis said the group’s role will be “advisory” and would work in tandem with a “legal group” for the Cyprus problem which, he said, would be created and announced in due course.

Friday’s “political group” meeting comes after the government had announced on Monday that the National Council will convene on September 13.

The meeting will take place to allow Christodoulides to inform party leaders of the latest developments regarding the Cyprus problem ahead of his trip to New York for the United Nations General Assembly later that month.
