Cyprus spending on fire protection below EU average

The proportion of Cyprus’ government expenditure spent on fire protection services was slightly below the European Union average in 2022, according to data released by the EU’s statistical service Eurostat.

A total of 0.4 per cent of government spending in Cyprus in 2022 was spent on fire protection services, slightly lower than the EU average of 0.5 per cent.

This amounted to €38.7 million in Cyprus through the year.

Romania had the highest proportion of its government expenditure on fire safety, at 0.7 per cent, while the Czech Republic, Estonia, Lithuania, Germany, and Greece all spent 0.6 per cent.

At the other end, Denmark spent just 0.1 per cent of its total government expenditure on fire safety, while European Economic Area member Iceland spent just 0.2 per cent.

At the same time, Cyprus had the fifth-highest proportion of its workforce being employed as firefighters last year, at 0.3 per cent.

That figure dwarfed the EU average, which stands at less than 0.2 per cent, and was beaten by only Croatia, Estonia, Greece and the Czech Republic.

The Netherlands had the lowest proportion of its workforce employed as firefighters of any EU country last year, with Sweden, Finland, and Slovenia all also employing less than 0.15 per cent of their respective workforces as firefighters.
