What causes dark under-eye circles?
Georgina East is a skin specialist based in London, England, who runs two clinics.
She told The U.S. Sun that in addition to genetics and underlying health conditions, various lifestyle factors can cause dark circles under your eyes:
- Aging
“As you get older, your skin becomes thinner, and blood vessels beneath it become more visible, leading to dark circles,” she said.
- Fatigue
“Lack of sleep or oversleeping can make your skin appear dull and pale, causing dark circles,” she said.
- Allergic reactions
“Allergic reactions and dry eyes can trigger dark circles,” she said.
“Scratching itchy skin may cause inflammation and broken blood vessels, leading to pigmentation.”
- Sun exposure
“Prolonged sun exposure or injury can contribute to dark circles forming under your eyes,” she said.
- Dehydration
“When your body isn’t well-hydrated, the skin beneath your eyes looks dull and sunken, making dark circles more noticeable,” she said.
“I’m so in love with this product and I need to stock up. Never in my life did I think I’d find a product I [would] live by religiously from now on.
“It’s such a lightweight product — you only need a pea-sized amount. It’s not expensive, and it moisturizes very well. I’m so happy with the results! I highly recommend it.”
