In brief: Apply by Sept. 4 to fill Byron school board vacancy through 2026

BYRON

The Byron Union School District (BUSD) Board of Trustees is accepting applications from community members interested in filling the seat of Board Trustee Jessica Bane, who resigned Aug. 12. Bane was elected to the school board in November 2022 for a four-year term.

Under California State law, when a seat opens on the Board of Education, trustees can choose to fill a vacant seat via provisional appointment or through a special election. The BUSD Board of Trustees voted unanimously Aug. 14 to fill the vacancy by provisional appointment.

Application packets are available online at byronunionschooldistrict.us/page/trustee-appt and in the BUSD office at 14301 Byron Highway in Byron.

The deadline for submitting applications is 4 p.m. Sept. 4. Any application received after the deadline will not be accepted or considered. Complete applications can be dropped off at the BUSD office or submitted electronically to Kelly Edwards, the executive assistant to the superintendent, at kedwards@byron.k12.ca.us.

The BUSD board will interview candidates and make a selection to fill the vacancy during their Sept. 12 meeting that starts at 5:30 p.m. The candidate filling the vacancy will serve until its term ends in December 2026.

Interested candidates must reside within the BUSD boundaries, be a citizen of California, at least 18 years old, registered to vote and must have no disqualifying criminal record. Candidates also cannot work for BUSD or have any district affiliations that would be deemed a conflict-of-interest.

For more information contact Edwards at the email address above or 925-809-7502.
