I wanted more privacy in my garden – my hubby made us a new fence on the cheap and people say it’s a ‘work of art’

A WOMAN has revealed how her husband gave their fence a budget makeover and people are stunned by just how good it looks.

Dontrell Black took to social media to show off her new fencing, thanking her hubby for his hard work and letting people know he wasn’t available to do it for them.

She revealed they decided to go for a money-saving solution instead of using regular fence panels.

“Our fence – I’m very proud of my husband – a cheap solution – all boards from pallets,” she added.

Instead of opting for fence panels where costs start from £30 and can go up to over £100, the couple uses pallets instead.

Pallets are often using for construction sites and you can find used ones online for a bargain price.

While Dontrell didn’t say just how much they spent on the pallets, you can buy them for as little as £5 on eBay.

She revealed that she treated the wood with a matt varnish from Sadolin with two layers to ensure it was durable in all weather conditions.

A tub of the varnish costs around £70 and she revealed ‘it was the most expensive’ part of the entire fence transformation.

The finished results featured a gorgeous solid herringbone design to the fence meaning no neighbours could peek through.

“Thank you for your wonderful comments – I hope it will inspire someone,” she added.

And it certainly did with many asking if her husband could do the same to theirs.

She jokingly wrote: “Unfortunately, I’m not renting my husband out right now.”

The post was shared to the Facebook group, homegardendiy, and went viral with over 600 likes and over 100 comments.

People were quick to comment and praise her husband for his DIY skills.

One person wrote: “That is beautiful, so different.”

How high can a garden fence be?

Despite what many people think a garden fence can be as high as 100m but you need to get planning permission for any fence taller than 2m.

Any fence under 2m does not need planning permission.

However, there are some complications to this.

If you are thinking about front garden fences, restrictions state that fences alongside a driveway can be a maximum of 1m or 3ft.

You would need to get planning permission for putting a trellis on a fence of 2m.

But, if any plant that you grow on that trellis exceeds 2m, you do not need to obtain a permit for the growing plant.

Another commented: “He did a great job.  Very pretty.

“That fence is a work of art! Great design,” penned a third.

Meanwhile a fourth said: “Wow, that’s amazing such talent.”

“That’s a great look!!!  Great job!!!” claimed a fifth.

Someone else added: “Excellent job.”
