US envoy warns against normalizing relations with Kabul

Rina Amiri, the US Special Envoy for Afghanistan’s Women, Girls, and Human Rights, urged the international community on Saturday not to establish normal relations with the Islamic Emirate of Afghanistan unless there are significant improvements in their human rights practices.

Amiri made these comments on X, criticizing the Taliban’s decision to ban UN Special Rapporteur Richard Bennett from visiting Afghanistan and the recent approval of a law on virtue and vice enforcement.

She argued that these actions show the Taliban is continuing its extreme policies from the 1990s. Amiri stressed that the international community must maintain pressure and not normalize relations with the Taliban unless they make substantial progress in human rights.

The Taliban has claimed that its laws are based on Sharia and defended the ban on Bennett by claiming he spreads propaganda against the country.

Meanwhile, Amiri’s call highlights the ongoing concern over human rights in Afghanistan and the need for the international community to remain firm in its stance.

Without clear and meaningful improvements, normalizing relations could undermine efforts to promote regional human rights and stability.
