Buffalo Fire Department honors 2 fallen firefighters on 15-year anniversary of their deaths

BUFFALO, N.Y. (WIVB) -- The Buffalo Fire Department honored two of their own who died in the line of duty with a ceremony early Saturday morning.

Saturday marks 15 years since Lt. Charles Chip McCarthy and firefighter Jonathan Croom went inside a burning deli on Genesee Street to check for people stranded inside when the floor collapsed, killing both men.

The tragic events unfolded at 3:51 a.m. on Aug. 24, 2009, and Saturday's ceremony was held at the exact same time at the scene of the fire.

In addition to the ceremony, a mass was held at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph Church.
