Jodie Sweetin was busted on “Fuller House” set for trying to steal iconic prop

After two rounds as Stephanie Tanner, the actress really wanted the "Sea Pappy" head for herself. 

Making TV is a years-long process, so it's understandable that at the end of a project, some of those involved will want to take mementos to remember the experience. This motivation is surely only increased when not one but two shows were made using the same set and decorations. So at the end of Fuller House, star Jodie Sweetin wanted to secure an iconic feature of the Tanner family home set — but she got busted.

“I took the head of that weird little statue that sat at the base of the stairs,” Sweetin told PEOPLE in a new interview. “I attempted to take the whole thing, but it was rather unwieldy the night of the wrap of the show, and hard to get out of there without anyone noticing that I was carrying a giant statue.”

But, Sweetin continued, "I got stopped with the head in my car. And they were like, ‘You can't take that until we inventory it.’ So, I tried to steal the Sea Pappy head, basically.”

Though Sweetin's first attempt to take the Sea Pappy head with her was unsuccessful, she subsequently figured out a subtler approach. Though she had to leave the statue and its head with the crew while they did inventory of the set and props, Sweetin made her claim by applying a Post-It note to the head that said it was meant for her. Sure enough, that worked!

“And then one day, a couple of weeks later, my doorbell rang,” Sweetin told PEOPLE. “I opened it up and no one was there, just the Sea Pappy head. It was the best moment.”

Sweetin also talked about her ploy to take the Sea Pappy — which she notes is a styrofoam recreation — on the late Bob Saget's podcast in 2021. "I would have helped you take the whole [statue]. I was there," Saget told her.

Sweetin originally played Stephanie Tanner on Full House, one of three daughters raised by their father Danny (Saget) and his friends, Jesse (John Stamos) and Joey (Dave Coulier). Sweetin reprised her role in the sequel series Fuller House, which brought the premise full-circle by having Stephanie help her older sister D.J. (Candace Cameron Bure) raise her own children.

Sweetin is also far from the only cast member to have taken something from set. Back in 2020, Stamos revealed on Instagram that he now owns the blue-and-white checkered sofa that was at the center of the Tanners' living room in both Full House and Fuller House.
