Sports Briefs: Mill Valley’s Todzo second to winner Qin at Double Dipsea
San Jose’s Gang Qin was the overall winner and Sonoma’s Megan Hansen was the first woman across the finish line in Saturday’s Double Dipsea race from Stinson Beach to Mill Valley and back.
The 60-year-old Qin finished the 13.7-mile trail race with an adjusted time of 1 hour, 51 minutes, 2 seconds. Qin’s actual time of 2:41.04 was good enough for 55th, but he benefitted from a 50-minute handicap. Second-place Mark Todzo of Mill Valley, 60, clocked in at 1:52.55, ahead of Palo Alto 60-year-old Brian Sterling (1:55.28), who took third.
Hansen, 43, placed fourth overall in 1:56.26, followed by Oakland’s Zach Griffin (1:56.38) to round out the top five. Mill Valley’s Cat Malone, 57, and Jennifer Foster, 50, finished within 15 seconds of each other to win their classes. Malone, sixth overall in 1:58.45, was first in the women’s 55-59 group, followed by seventh-place Foster (1:58.59), the winner of the women’s 50-54 group.
Chico’s Katie Crane (1:59.29), Penngrove’s John Lundy (1:59.51) and San Anselmo’s John Corr (1;59.53) rounded out the top 10 overall.
Scratch runner Edward Stace, 36, of Chico ran the fastest actual time (2:02.34) among the men, while Newport Beach’s Natalie Ward, 27, was the fastest female in 2:21.58. Stace and Ward finished 11th and 12th, respectively, in the adjusted results.
The top 10 finishers based on actual time were, in order: State, San Francisco Charlie Koch (2:05.24), San Francisco’s Joseph Mutter (2:08.33), Lafayette’s Kyle De Lauro (2:11.13), San Mateo’s Carl Dambkowski (2:19.21), Mill Valley’s Nathan Spady (2:20.48), Diablo’s Jacob Rubin (2:20.53), Ward, San Francisco’s Stephen Rogers (2:23.29), and Mill Valley’s David Hafferty (2:23.33).
