A man who was injured in an incident at an Underground station in south London has died in hospital.

The 28-year-old was allegedly assaulted on the stairs at Southwark station on Thursday evening, and had been in a critical condition since.

He died in hospital on Saturday evening with his family by his side, British Transport Police (BTP) said.

Rakeem Miles, 23, was arrested on Friday morning and later charged with grievous bodily harm with intent.

Detectives are now seeking to update the charge following the death of the victim.

Miles, a Southwark local, remains in custody.

Officers were initially called to the busy station, located close to Waterloo, at 9.44pm on Thursday following reports of an assault on the staircase.

Senior investigating officer Detective Inspector Paul Attwell said: ‘There is no place for violence on the rail network and I am urging anyone with information, who is yet to speak to us, to get in touch.

‘We have specialist family liaison officers supporting the victim’s family and my thoughts remain with them at this incredibly difficult time.’
