Older adults can enjoy ‘Hamlet,’ cheese and hikes next month

Theater, cheese tasting, hiking and helping restore wetlands are on the September calendar for Bay Area Older Adults.

A Dinner and Shakespeare Night Out on Thursday, Sept. 5, starts with seafood or chicken and ends with “Hamlet” at the Contra Costa Civic Theater. A shuttle leaves Cupertino at 3 p.m.; participants should be back by 10 p.m. Registration is $140-$160 and includes transportation, dinner, gratuities, theater tickets and two tour leaders.

A day trip on Wednesday, Sept. 18, starts with cheese tasting at a local dairy farm, then a stop for lunch by the beach followed by a 2-mile walk at Point Reyes National Seashore to see and learn about Tule elk. A shuttle leaves Cupertino at 8 p.m.; participants should be back by 6 p.m.

Volunteers are needed on Sunday, Sept. 22, to help restore the wetlands Don Edwards Wildlife Refuge in San Jose for the birds, insects and mammals that live there. Help with raking and mulching to prepare the area for native plants. All activities will be standing up and supplies, tools, snacks and bottled water are provided, as is lunch. The habitat restoration is scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-1:30 p.m.

A leisurely 2.5-mile walk is planned for Wednesday, Sept. 25, at Deer Hollow Farm. Participants can learn about the Permanente Creek flood protection plan as they stroll. After lunch, visit the 160-year old farm, gardens, farm animals and blacksmith shed. The walk is set for 9 a.m.- 2:30 p.m.
