Mariners Game #133 Preview: August 26, 2024, Giants at Mariners
Does Robbie Ray’s slider still go brrrrr?
Today marks the 2,000th game in T-Mobile Park. Do you know who scored the first run in the building? None other than Dan Wilson.
The last time the Seattle Mariners saw Robbie Ray, he walked five while striking out three and blowing out his UCL in the fourth inning of the second game of the 2023 season. Traded to the Giants in exchange for Mitch Haniger plus in January, he spent most of the season continuing to rehab his elbow. But since returning a month ago, he’s been up to his old tricks, striking out the world, but also giving away a ton of free passes and surrendering a lot of hard-hit fly balls. Robbie Ray: Three True Outcomes, but make it pitching.
Bryan Woo will have the ball for the Mariners. Y’all know I’m obsessed with the development of his changeup, and I’m hoping we get to see it a lot today—the San Francisco Giants rank 25th in the League in xwOBA against changeups.
The Ray-Woo matchup also marks the first time in franchise history that two starting pitchers with three-letter names have faced off.

News
- Victor Robles update:
Victor Robles is out of the lineup today, but Dan Wilson describes it as "about as good a result as it could be" after being hit on the hand. Says the issue is more with throwing than swinging the bat; the ideal is a full day of rest but he could be available off the bench.

- J.P. Crawford made his first rehab start and played five innings last night in Tacoma, going 0-for-3 in the 4-5 loss and without having a ball hit to him at shortstop. He’ll play in today’s series finale at 1:35, going a full nine innings, and the team will make a determination on the next steps in his rehab after that. Tacoma and Everett are both on the road next week, in El Paso and Vancouver, respectively.

This Day in Mariners History
- 1996: The Mariners set the record for most back-to-back homers in a season with 17 (or 34, depending on how you think about this), with a pair of tanks from Griffey and A-Rod in the eighth inning of a loss to the Red Sox
- 2001: Noted terrible person Omar Vizquel manages to escalate a complaint about the sunlight reflecting off Arthur Rhodes’ earing into a benches-clearing incident in the ninth inning, but the Mariners have the last laugh as they beat Cleveland 3-2
- 2010: King Félix becomes the third-youngest player to reach 1,000 strikeouts as the Mariners take down the Red Sox in the second half of a doubleheader. The 1,000th victim? David Ortiz
