SEASON LONG EFFORTS PAY OFF FOR WAGNER, MOORE, MARKHAM, COLLINS, AND TUCKE

By William Burkhart

Caleb Helms would make a return to Wayne County and start on the pole of the 25 lap Pine Tree Towing and Recovery Feature with points leader Leyton Wagner to his outside. Helms would jump out to the early lead. Wagner and Tyler Gunn in second and third respectively. Wagner would make a few efforts to get past Helms. He would try a slider on lap 4 but would slip and let the 91 of Gunn get by him. 17 to go Tyler Gunn would slide past the 40x of Helms and take over the lead. Gunn would slice and dice his way through lap traffic. Jordan Ryan would enter the mix on lap 13 to try and steal the track championship. Lap 15 Caleb Helms would eliminate the 8 tenth of a second lead that Tyler Gunn had to steal the lead back. Gunn would stay within half of a second of the Findlay Ohio Native. As hard as he would try Gunn couldn’t catch the 40 of Helms as he wins his first Wayne County feature in 2024 in his first visit. Tyler Gunn would be second and Leyton Wagner would finish third to collect his first Wayne County Speedway Track Championship.

Millersburg’s Mitch Caskey and Mansfield’s Dave Hornikel would lead the field to the green for the Malcuit Tavern UMP Late Models. Kyle Moore who had the championship clinched was offered to start 12th for a shot at a $500 bonus if he could win and excepted Jason’s challenge. Hornikel would jump up to the top side and take the opening lead. Coming around for lap 2 the field would get stacked up and bring out the first Bucks Auto Sales Yellow Flag of the evening. Back under the green Hornikel would get back to work. Moore would drive his Tye Twarog longhorn up to the second spot by lap 5. As he would catch the back of Hornikel another yellow would fly for Trace Settles spinning in turn 4. Back under the Green Moore would rip the lip and take over the lead. Behind them JR Gentry would make his way into the 6th spot after starting in the 16th position. Moore would run away with the race.  As the laps ticked by Gentry would find his way into the third sport. Moore would open up close to a 6 second lead. As he came around to the checkers one car would spin setting up a one lap dash. With Nathan Loney on his tail Moore would run away from the field to pick up his 11th WCS win of 2024 and his first Malcuits Tavern UMP Late Model Championship. JR Gentry would sneak by Loney to go 16th to 2nd and Loney would take third.

The top 2 in Flynn’s Tire & Auto Service UMP Modifieds would make up the top to starting positions. Jimmy Humphrey would start on the pole with Ryan Markham to his outside. Markham would duke it out with Humphrey before getting by him at the flag stand on the opening lap. Markham would rip the lip with Jess Hartman behind him. Ryan Robey would spin in turn in 4 to bring out the first Bucks Auto Sales Yellow Flag of modified competition. Back under green flag action Markham would lead the field with Hartman all over his back bumper. Lap 5 would see another yellow for the Hood coming up on Daniel Sanchez’s machine. Back under green it would be a lot of the same story with Markham leading and Hartman in a very close battle. After another yellow we went back under the green with Markham still holding on to the lead. Hartman would try some big slider jobs to try and take over the lead. Lap 12 Casey Butler and Dustin Daugherty would get up to the 5 of Hartman. When it looked as if Markham would have the race in the bag a Yellow would fly once more for a spinning Ron Miller. Markham would choose the top side and get a great restart in the 2-lap shootout. Hartman would try slide job after slide job. On the last lap going into turn three Markham would tag the wall allowing Hartman to get along side him. The two would drag race to the line and Markham would beat Hartman by a 10th of a second to win the feature and his first Flynn’s Tire &Auto Service UMP Late Model Championship.

Johnny Bruce and Kyle Petit would lead the Joyride Transport field to the green for 12 laps. Justin Cranmore would jump out the early lead with Johnny Bruce running in second and points leader Anthony Collins in third. Yellow would fly for debris on lap 3. A few yellows would slow up action before Cranmore would lead the field to some green flag laps. Doug Hensel would find his way into the second spot and work on getting past the 2 machine with Anthony Collins behind him. Cranmore would stick to his line. Despite all efforts Hensel couldn’t by as Cranmore would pick up his 4th win of 2024 as third place finisher Anthony Collins would pick up his first career track championship.

Braden Tucke would start on the pole for the Glass House Super Stock feature with Kyle Moore to his outside for 15 laps of racing. Tucke would jump out to the early lead with Moore in hot pursuit.  Tucke would run the middle line with Moore right around the wall. The two would run away from the field before Jim Nicley would spin to bring the Bucks Auto Sales yellow flag. Back under way the two would go back to their huge lead over the field. Moore and Tucke would duke it out until Moore would take the lead from Tucke with 5 laps to go. Moore would cruise off to the victory as Braden Tucke would win back to back championships in the Glass House Super Stocks.

Up next at Orrville’s Historic Oval, Sunday September 1, the Pete Jacobs Memorial, $10,000 to win FAST on Dirt Sprints, along with Malcuit Tavern UMP Late Models, Flynn’s Tire & Auto Service UMP Modifieds, and the Glass House Super Stocks.
