23 killed in armed attack on bus in Balochistan, Pakistan

Pakistani media reports that armed assailants attacked a passenger bus in the Balochistan province of Pakistan, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 people.

Dawn newspaper of Pakistan reports that the attack occurred early Monday, August 26 in the Meskhel area of Balochistan.

According to the report, the attackers blocked the interstate highway in the Rarsham area of Meskhel district and forced passengers off several buses.

Najib Kakar, a local official, told the media that after identifying the passengers, the attackers opened fire, resulting in the deaths of at least 23 travelers.

He added that “the attackers searched vehicles traveling to Punjab, and passengers from Punjab were identified and shot.”

AFP has confirmed that the victims from Punjab were identified, with at least three individuals from Balochistan among the casualties.

It is noteworthy that a similar attack occurred in April this year, where nine passengers were forced off a bus near Nushki and shot after the assailants checked their identification cards.

So far, no individual or group has claimed responsibility for this attack.

The ongoing violence in Balochistan underscores the need for increased security measures and a comprehensive strategy to address the underlying issues fueling such attacks in the region.
