No swearing on air, radio stations warned

The broadcasting authority on Monday cautioned radio stations to be mindful of the language used during sports events, after it received a number of complaints over offensive language.

In a circular shared to all stations, it said inappropriate, insensitive and offensive content was being broadcast over the airwaves either by presenters or by callers phoning in.

Listeners sending inappropriate messages and then being read out in full is also a matter of concern, the broadcasting authority warned.

It said all stations are required to uphold respect for people’s private and professional life, as well as their political, cultural and scientific activities.

Harming an individual’s image violates the law, the broadcasting authority highlighted.

As such, broadcasters are required to take steps to observe generally accepted standards of decency and taste in language and behaviour, taking into account the type and context of the broadcast in question.

Particular care must be taken in the case of programmes broadcast at a time when minors may be watching.

The use of language in a way that may offend the sensitivities of religious, racial, political or other social groups is prohibited.

It warned that failure to comply with the circular could entail possible action and sanctions by the authority.
