5 people dead in apparent murder-suicide on Long Island: NCPD

SYOSSET, N.Y. (PIX11) – A man is believed to have killed four people before he took his own life in a Long Island shooting on Sunday, according to the Nassau County Police Department.

The shooting happened just before noon on Wyoming Court in Syosset. Police officers found a man who appeared to have a self-inflicted gunshot wound outside the home, according to authorities.

The bodies of four other people were discovered inside the home, per police. All five people were pronounced dead at the scene.

Neighbors told PIX11 News that a woman who lived in the house for years recently died and that one of her sons lived with her. Out-of-town family members were at the home for the mother's funeral and to sell the house, according to longtime neighbor Wendy Paisner.

"He just snapped, I think," Paisner said about the son who lived in the home. "He's one of four siblings... they were going to sell the house and he's lived there his whole life. He really needed support... I didn't think it was that he would take his whole family... I thought maybe he was distraught and maybe he did this to himself."

Other neighbors told PIX11 News that the son was a volunteer firefighter who just quit last week after his mother's death.

The Nassau County Police Department has not released the names of the victims.
