Woman dies in downtown Austin homicide overnight, APD says

AUSTIN (KXAN) -- A woman died overnight Sunday into early Monday morning in what police said was a homicide in downtown Austin.

The Austin Police Department said the incident is being investigated as the city's 41st homicide of the year.

A public information officer with APD said police officers who were patrolling the Sixth Street area were flagged down around 1:38 a.m. in the 500 block of East Sixth Street by a passerby who said a woman closeby appeared to be injured.

The woman was taken to a hospital where she later died, police said.

KXAN crews on scene early Monday morning saw crime scene tape blocking off an alley near Neches Street and E. 6th Street.

Police said Monday morning a person of interest was taken into custody for questioning. It's not clear if there was a known relationship between the person of interest and the victim.

Police are still investigating and said officers are working to obtain surveillance footage from the area and other evidence.

APD said investigators believe this was an isolated incident and there is no ongoing threat to the public. Anyone with information should reach out to the APD Homicide Tipline at 512-477-3588 or Crimestoppers at 512-472-TIPS(8477).
