Fiji man drowns in Neosho River, sheriff's office reports

NEOSHO COUNTY (KSNT) - A man from Fiji drowned in the Neosho River on Sunday, the Neosho County Sheriff's Office reported.

At 6 p.m. the Neosho County Sheriff’s Office, Chanute Fire Department and Kansas Department of Wildlife and Parks were called to 207th Road and Grady at the Detners Dam for a drowning.

Responders found a 21-year-old international student from Fiji who'd been attending Neosho County Community College had drowned. According to the sheriff's office, he had been swimming with friends.

"Witnesses stated the man jumped off of the dam and became caught in the current and drowned," the sheriff's office wrote. "The victims body has been recovered and sent for an autopsy."

The sheriff's office said the name of the man is being withheld until the family is notified.
