EMSA releases Medical Heat Alert for August 26

OKLAHOMA CITY (KFOR) - On Monday, EMSA released its latest medical heat-related illness calls, saying over the weekend alone EMSA medics responded to nine (9) heat-related illness calls in the Oklahoma City area and transported five (5) patients to local hospitals.

Since the most recent heat alert went into effect, medics have responded to 34 heat-related illness calls in the Oklahoma City area and transported a total of 19 patients to local hospitals.

The Heat Alert is set to remain in place until Friday (8/30) when temperatures are expected to drop significantly, EMSA officials said.

So far this year, EMSA medics have responded to 324 heat-related illness calls in the OKC area and transported 202 patients to local hospitals.

EMSA has provided heat safety tips to stay protected during the summer heat:

  • PRE-HYDRATION is key in preventing heat-related illness. Drink plenty of water or electrolyte replacement drinks several hours prior to and during long exposure to the summer heat.
  • Wear light-colored, loose-fitting clothing and a wide brimmed hat if working outdoors and take plenty of shade breaks.
  • No alcohol or caffeine.
  • If you do not have air conditioning, find a cooling station or public space (such as libraries or malls) during the day.
  • Don’t limit your use of air conditioning.
  • Use the buddy system if working outdoors and check on elderly neighbors.
  • Keep a cell phone on you at all times when outdoors, including walking, running daily errands, yard work or sports and physical activity.
  • EMSA’s Medical Heat Alert will remain in effect until temperatures and/or heat-related calls decrease considerably.
