Dunfermline Athletic 2 Queen’s Park 0

Queen’s Park B kicked off their SPFL Reserve Season with a trip to Fife to take on Dunfermline Athletic and it was the hosts that picked up the three points with a 2-0 success.

Magnus Mackenzie, Liam McLeish, Tyrece McDonnell and Timam Scott, who were on the bench for the first team on Saturday, all started against The Pars who included the experienced Michael O’Halloran, Joseph Chalmers and Craig Wighton in their ranks from the first whistle.

The hosts kicked off in pouring summer rain with O’Halloran winning an early corner after a dash down the right wing.

On eight minutes Queen’s Park B almost opened the scoring when Scott cut in from the right and looked to send a low shot past Toby Oluwayemi however the goalkeeper dived to save with McLeish was unable to turn the rebound in.

The hosts opened the scoring on 14 minutes when Chalmers drilled over a corner from the right and Andrew Tod rose on the six-yard line to nod powerfully past Sam Kane.

Shortly afterwards shot-stopper Kane used his legs to keep out an angled drive from Wighton.

Midway through the half a fine passing move from the visitors resulted in Jamie Bradley teeing up a chance for McLeish however his chipped effort was blocked by Oluwayemi.

Twelve minutes from the break new recruit Jay McGarva did well to deflect a new-bound Wighton effort after O’Halloran had got free on the right and cut the ball back.

A second goal was only delayed for seconds as Tommy Fogarty headed the resultant corner kick into the path of Dunfermline’s Trialist who swept home from eight yards.

Dunfermline created another opening on 42 minutes when the ball was worked through the Queen’s defence to Wighton with Kane again using his legs to save.

Lennon Connolly was introduced at the restart in place of McLeish with the young visitors enjoying a good start as they forced four corners which all required careful watching by the Dunfermline defence.

As Queen’s bright period continued Tyrece McDonnell was released on the left and he cut the ball back onto his right foot before curling a shot towards the far corner that was met by a fine save from Oluwayemi.

Ross McLean then did well to set Connolly free only for Oluwayemi to force the replacement wide and his pass across the Dunfermline goal found no takers.

On 56 minutes Scott slipped a pass back into the path of Bradley who sent a 20-yarder whistling past.

Sixteen minutes later home substitutes Jake Sutherland and Freddie Rowe exchanged passes and that allowed the latter to sweep a shot goalward with the ball just curling wide.

With 12 minutes left Mclean did well to block another Rowe effort on the line after Kane had pushed out a Jake Sutherland shot.

A fine cross-field pass from McLean looked to have given substitute Josaih Sowa the chance to run in-behind the home rearguard however the young Canadian was crowded out and the danger ended.

As the game entered the final five minutes McLean pierced the Black and White defence again to find Connolly but, as before, the substitute’s cut-back was not met by a team-mate.

Kane showed that his legs were handy again in injury time as he raced from his line to clock a shot from Jake Sutherland.
