Minor Notes: Mayer likely out for season; Anthony has huge week

The biggest news of the week involves Boston's second-ranked prospect. There was also another promotion, as the WooSox added another player who was great this season for Portland.

Mayer likely done for the season
Per Alex Speier of The Boston Globe, recently promoted shortstop Marcelo Mayer is likely done for the season with a lumbar strain in his lower back. This will be the second consecutive season where Mayer won't play a game in September, as he missed two months of action last season with a shoulder injury. The second-ranked prospect in the system will have to wait until 2025 to make his WooSox debut. The promotion was well-earned, as he hit .307/.370/.480 with 28 doubles, eight home runs, and 13 stolen bases in 77 games with the Sea Dogs in 2024.

Dobbins promoted to Worcester
Right-handed pitcher Hunter Dobbins will be moving up to Worcester, as first reported on by Hunter Noll of Beyond the Monster and BoSox Injection. Dobbins, an eighth-round pick by Boston back in 2021 out of Texas Tech, is 7-3 with a 3.17 ERA in 21 starts for the Sea Dogs this year. He has tossed 105 innings with 98 strikeouts, 39 walks, and a 1.23 WHIP. According to Chris Henrique of MLB.com, Dobbins will skip a rotation turn and will pitch for Worcester at the end of this week.

Slaten begins rehab assignment
Relief pitcher Justin Slaten is back in action, beginning a rehab assignment with Portland on Friday. He will be a big addition to a Red Sox bullpen that has struggled in the second half. In 31 games with Boston this year, Slaten is 5-2 with a 3.38 ERA and a 2.44 FIP. He has 45 strikeouts and just nine walks.

Drohan to the IL
Left-handed pitcher Shane Drohan was placed on the 7-day injured list with left shoulder inflammation. The 25-year-old has a 6.43 ERA in seven innings with Worcester this year. After being selected by the White Sox in the Rule 5 draft last year, Drohan returned to the Red Sox organization after he was designated for assignment by Chicago. He was originally drafted by Boston in 2020.
