Kansas City Chiefs drop WR Kadarius Toney

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs are parting ways with wide receiver Kadarius Toney.

According to ESPN reporter Adam Schefter, a source announced that the team waived the 25-year-old, 2021 first-round pick after a disappointing 2023 season.

In May, the Chiefs declined a fifth year on Toney's contract, leading to potential trade speculations. However, Toney was not traded to any other team and now sits as a free agent.

During the 2023 season, Toney faced multiple injuries, specifically a torn meniscus during the first practice of training camp, and several avoidable mistakes.

One of the wide receiver's costliest moments happened in last year's season opener. Toney deflected a pass that resulted in an interception and a touchdown by the Detroit Lions. Kansas City lost the game by a point.

But perhaps his most memorable mistake happened during a game against the Buffalo Bills. He caught a lateral from tight end Travis Kelce and scored on the play. However, the highlight reel moment was undone when a review revealed he lined up offsides. The Bills beat the Chiefs 20-17.

ESPN said that in the 2023 season, Toney played in 13 total games, but only recorded 169 yards and a single touchdown on 27 catches.

Although the wide receiver struggled with the Chiefs franchise, he made multiple iconic plays in his less than two years with the team.

Specifically, his 65-yard punt return in the final minutes of Super Bowl LVII. This moment helped the franchise earn another Super Bowl win with a final score of 38-35 against the Philadelphia Eagles.

After winning two Super Bowls in Kansas City, Toney will look to join his third team since entering the NFL.
